Athletistic / Hockey. Washington Capitals forward Dylan Strome says he will do everything he can to make sure Capitals captain Alexander Ovechkin scores as many goals as possible in the new NHL season. The 38-year-old Russian continues to break Wayne Gretzky’s NHL regular-season goalscoring record.

“During the 40 starting games, everyone wrote Ovechkin off, but in the second half of the regular season, he really reached a new level. So in the new season, I expect a lot from Ovi. We all expect a record from him. I will be ready. Of course, I will try to give him the pass at the right time.

A guy like Ovechkin can’t be dismissed. He has one of the best, if not the best, shots in the NHL. I see that on a daily basis. Any time a player can shoot like that, it’s their teammates’ job to help him get the puck back, and that’s what we try to do.

“I think Alexander is very, very modest. When we talk about what he has accomplished in his career, Ovi is very humble and very grateful to his teammates. But of course, he thinks about records. He could become the best scorer in NHL history, and I hope that will happen in the new season,” Strome was quoted as saying by the NHL press service.

Alexander Ovechkin has scored 853 goals in his NHL career in regular season play. He is now 41 goals away from Gretzky’s record of 894. The 38-year-old Russian’s contract with the Washington Capitals is valid for two more seasons.

The new NHL season will begin on October 4 with a game between the Buffalo Sabres and the New Jersey Devils in Prague, Czech Republic. The first game in North America will be played on October 8.
