The American Hockey League (AHL) has made it mandatory for all players and referees to wear neck protection on the ice, the tournament’s press service reports.
This rule will be introduced at the start of the 2024/25 season. All AHL skaters, referees and linesmen will be required to wear an approved version of cut-resistant neck protection. Cut-resistant socks and arm guards have already been mandatory for AHL players and referees since the 2023-24 season.
In October 2023, the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL) urged hockey players to use neck and throat protection after an incident involving former NHL Pittsburgh Penguins hockey player Adam Johnson. During a UK championship game, Johnson, 29, who was playing for Nottingham, suffered a cut to the neck with a skate in a collision with an opponent and was knocked unconscious due to blood loss, later dying in hospital.
In this regard, junior leagues in North America have made neck protection mandatory, and some NHL hockey players have begun to participate in games with such protection.
