San Jose GM: ‘Askarov is a super talented goalie, we talked about him during the season’

General Manager of an NHL club San Jose Sharks Mike Greer spoke about signing a contract with the Russian goalkeeper Yaroslav Askarov highlighting his playing qualities.

Askarov was traded from Nashville on Friday, with the 22-year-old Russian signing a two-year, $4 million contract with the Sharks that kicks in for the 2025-26 season. The rookie contract he signed two years ago runs through the upcoming season.

“I think it’s a really important day for our organization. It’s great that we had the opportunity to add him to the team, I think it will inject some positive energy into the team.

We’ve talked about him off and on throughout the season. He’s obviously a super talented goalie and it’s not often you get a chance to add a goalie that young to your team. When you have a player that has that size and that ability to read the game and have that athleticism… I think it’s all about him, it’s just about putting it all together.

Yaroslav is a goalie who has all the makings of a stable goalie in the NHL, Greer told the NHL website.

Askarov was selected by Nashville with the 11th overall pick in the first round of the 2020 NHL Draft. He has been playing in the club system since 2022. Last season in the AHL, the 22-year-old played 44 regular season games and averaged 91.1% shooting per game. In the NHL, Askarov has played three games and recorded one win.
