Sports director of hockey “Dynamo” Sopin: “At a certain point, we no longer expected the Comtois to agree”

Moscow Sports Director “Dynamo » Alexey Sopin spoke about signing a contract with the former Anaheim forward Maxime Comtois.

Last week, the 25-year-old Canadian made his debut with the Blue and White in a friendly match against Dynamo Minsk (3:1). During the offseason, the former Anaheim Ducks and Carolina Hurricanes forward signed a one-year contract with the Muscovites.

— For most of the off-season after the transfers of Slepyshev, Mikheev and Shvets-Rogovoy, you said that the main goal now remained the signing of a goalkeeper, while the attack was already formed. Did they carefully hide the signing of Comtois or did they no longer hope for his agreement?

— Personally, I started guiding Max last fall, in November-December. After the new year, contacts began through his teammates and my acquaintances in North America. But he said he wanted to stay in North America. In May, there was a conversation with his North American agent and he again spoke about the priority of playing in the NHL.

Honestly, at one point we didn’t expect him to agree, but we kept this option in mind because finances allowed us to take another forward. When his representatives then contacted me and said he was ready to consider an offer from the KHL, we consulted with the coaching staff and together came to the conclusion that such a player should be retained.

“Yes, somewhere now we will have to modernize the units in order to integrate him into the lineup, but we have three attacking trios ready for combat,” Sopin told the Championship.

The new season of the FONBET KHL Championship starts on September 3. In their first match, Dynamo Moscow will host China’s Kunlun Red Star on September 4.
