Ovechkin on the language of writing last names on KHL jerseys: “The main thing is that people show good hockey”

Captain Washington Capitals Alexander Ovechkin told that it would accept any variation in the spelling of surnames on Kontinental Hockey League (KHL) players’ jerseys.

During the offseason, the All-Russian Hockey League (VHL) switched from English to Russian spelling of surnames on hockey jerseys. The KHL still writes surnames in Latin.

— Yesterday you came to the ceremony of the Dynamo Moscow youth team. Were you impressed by this event?

— I was invited by the Dynamo management, we had an agreement. So I arrived. I met the guys who defend our blue and white colors, who want to break through and play in the KHL. Ivan Ryabkin, of course, is a promising and talented guy.

God grant that everything works out for them. So that they work, develop, prove themselves. The event itself was held at the highest level and I enjoyed it.

— Now in the KHL there is a debate about in which language to write the names of players on hockey jerseys. Russian or English?

– To be honest, it doesn’t matter to me. The most important thing is that the people who wear these jerseys play good hockey. And what is written on the back is not so important to me. As they say, you have to play for the emblem on the chest, not for the name on the back.

— Many people want to see inscriptions in Russian, like in retro times.

– If they want, please. It doesn’t matter to me. “I am ready to accept any option, especially since it does not depend on me,” Ovechkin told .

The new season of the FONBET KHL Championship starts on September 3.
