Goalkeeper Yaroslav Askarov may not have enough data to reach its full potential, CEO saidNashville » Barry Trotz .
Earlier, Askarov was traded from Nashville to San Jose. The 22-year-old Russian signed a two-year, $4 million contract with the Sharks.
— Askarov will be a great goalie because he has incredible athleticism and is a confident person. But if you talk to elite goalies, they won’t talk about physical attributes. They’ll talk about mentality, thinking, preparation and things like that. And I’m not entirely sure Askarov has that.
I know this from my years of working with goalie coach Mitch Korn, who I consider the best in the business. Mentally, physically and emotionally, you have to reach a state of maturity in all of them to achieve stability in the game.
“Askarov is not quite ready yet. Will he be ready? Oh, yeah, if he takes the time and does everything he needs to do, he will definitely be ready,” Trotz was quoted as saying by The Score, citing The Athletic.
Askarov was selected by Nashville with the 11th overall pick in the first round of the 2020 NHL Draft. He has been playing in the club system since 2022. Last season in the AHL, the 22-year-old played 44 regular season games and averaged 91.1% shooting per game. In the NHL, Askarov has played three games and recorded one win.
