— The National Hockey League family is shocked and saddened by the tragic passing of Columbus Blue Jackets forward Johnny Gaudreau and his brother Matthew.

He was not only a great hockey player; he was a caring father and beloved husband, son, brother and teammate who inspired love in everyone who crossed his path.

Gaudreau often spoke of how his father taught him to skate as a child in his home state of New Jersey, and he carried that same youthful passion throughout his 11 seasons in the NHL.

We extend our deepest condolences to his wife Meredith; their children Noah and Johnny; his parents Guy and Jane; and sisters Kristen and Katie. “And we mourn with his teammates, his many hockey friends and his countless fans around the world,” Bettman said, according to the NHL press service.

Gaudreau was selected 104th overall by Calgary in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft and played for the team from 2014 to 2022. Since 2022, he has played for Columbus. In total, the American has played 763 regular season NHL games and scored 743 points (243+500).
