Athletistic / Hockey. NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly said the NHL is interested in in-depth coverage of Washington Capitals captain Alexander Ovechkin’s pursuit of Wayne Gretzky’s regular-season goalscoring record.
“Ovechkin’s pursuit of Gretzi’s record is high on the list of potential NHL events that we want to promote and make sure don’t go unnoticed. Some people assume that since Alexander is from Russia, this feat should take a back seat. However, “We couldn’t agree more. He’s been a tremendous ambassador for hockey for nearly 20 years, and his enthusiasm and passion for the game is infectious, and Ovechkin has done a lot to better the NHL and all of our players,” Daly said in The Athletic.
Alexander Ovechkin has scored 853 goals in his NHL career in regular season play. He is now 41 goals away from Gretzky’s record of 894. The 38-year-old Russian’s contract with the Washington Capitals is valid for two more seasons.
The new NHL season will begin on October 4 with a game between the Buffalo Sabres and the New Jersey Devils in Prague, Czech Republic. The first game in North America will be played on October 8.
