On Monday, Russian Sports Minister Mikhail Degtyarev spoke about a meeting with Azerbaijani Youth and Sports Minister Farid Gaibov, during which he invited the Azerbaijani team to join the KHL.
— In order to play hockey at the KHL level, any country, not just Azerbaijan, must meet certain conditions. The first and most important thing is a high-quality infrastructure, a spacious ice palace that will be comfortable for both spectators and hockey players themselves. The second is the interest in playing hockey. So that people themselves want to go there, they watch. Thirdly, the source of money for players. As numerous experiments show, if there is money, then players can be brought.
Some “non-hockey” countries have conducted research and raised the question of where to find players. Even in our time, if we take away Europe, which is hostile to us, there are enough players in the United States and Canada, as well as in the KHL space, to form two or three more teams. But for this to happen, conditions number one and two must be met. So Azerbaijan must do its homework before thinking about joining,” Medvedev told correspondent.
