Russian attacker Washington Capitals Alexander Ovechkin assessed the capital team’s readiness for the new NHL season, taking into account its proximity to Wayne Gretzky’s regular-season goals record.
Ovechkin ranks second on the NHL’s all-time scoring list with 853 goals, behind Gretzky (894). As a member of Washington, Ovechkin won the Stanley Cup in 2018 and, with the Russian national team, he won the world championship three times.
“I always say that I just have to do my job. Of course, without goals you won’t win a match. But now the most important thing for us is to find the right combinations in the lines, because new guys have joined the team.
These are new linemates, new teammates. You just have to think, ‘Okay, what’s going to help us be successful in the new season?'” — the NHL website quotes Ovechkin.
On Tuesday, September 17, Ovechkin turned 39.
