“I think Shesterkin is focusing on hockey” – Rangers coach on Russian’s contract situation

Head coach New York Rangers Pierre Laviolette commenting on the rumors about the goalkeeper’s decision Igor Shesterkin not to renew his contract with the club, said that the Russian is focusing on hockey.

Earlier, journalist Kevin Weeks reported that Shesterkin rejected the Rangers’ offer of an eight-year contract worth $88 million. If the deal is signed, the Russian would become the highest-paid goaltender in the NHL. According to previous internal reports, Shesterkin expects to receive a contract from the club worth $12 million per year.

— I think Igor is focusing on hockey. I don’t really care about these things and what anyone writes. We came here (for the game against Pittsburgh, editor’s note) to play hockey. That’s exactly what we’re focused on,” USA Today reporter Vince Mercogliano quoted Lavioletta as saying.

Shesterkin previously said he was not going to start the season without a new contract with the club. The Russian’s current deal with a salary of $5.6 million runs until the end of the 2024/25 season.

The Rangers will play their first game of the new season on October 9 against Pittsburgh.
