Russian striker and captain “Washington” Alexander Ovechkin lost the title of highest paid player in the NHL, reports Forbes.
In the 2023 rankings, Ovechkin was in the lead with Colorado Canadian forward Nathan MacKinnon. Their revenue was $17.5 million per season, taking into account additional revenue and sponsorship deals.
In the 2024 rankings, Ovechkin is in third place with income of $16 million, including $11 million from his contract with the Capitals, and another $5 million from sponsorship deals. Edmonton forward Connor McDavid will earn the same amount.
First place in the ranking goes to Toronto’s American forward Auston Matthews ($21.7 million), followed by MacKinnon ($19.5 million).
Ovechkin, 39, is the second highest scorer in NHL history with 853 goals, behind Wayne Gretzky (894). With Washington, the Russian won the Stanley Cup in 2018.
