Zvyagin: “The news of Wei’s departure was unexpected, we were absolutely not prepared for it”

Head Coach of the Avangard Sergei Zvyagin after the match with Amur, he said that the departure of Canadian legionnaire Linden Vey from the Omsk club surprised him.

Avangard beat Amur with a score of 2:1. The winning goal was scored by Nikolai Prokhorkin. On November 1, it became known that the Omsk team’s top scorer of the season, Wei, terminated his contract for family reasons.

– It’s a difficult game. An away victory, where the guys played patiently, courageously, with great character and dedication, and managed to win.

— What can you say about the transfer of Matvey Zaseda to Avangard? It’s been a long time since he practiced playing.

– Yes, now he only had one training session with the team upon his arrival. We will see what condition he is in. There has been talk for a long time about the transfer of Matvey Zaseda to Avangard. I’m glad the situation is resolved. At some point he will be in the lineup.

— Will he train in the VHL?

– We’ll see. Physically, Zaseda already looked good in training. We knew he was a hardworking professional. His strengths are speed, confidence, instinct in front of goal, shooting and character. And the fact that he could be in any top three.

— Where did Darren Dietz go? What do you think of replacing Alex Grant?

— Dietz has not yet recovered from his injury. Alex, we knew what caliber of player he was. He’s also an experienced guy, that’s why he played today in the Far East. It was hard, but it looked good.

– Today you only managed to take control of the game in the third period.

— Initially, we did not want to abandon the initiative. But we understood that the opponent was going to start in an active, aggressive manner. We had to play patient and simple, unselfish on defense, and that’s what the guys did. Yes, in the third period we initially controlled the game, but the opponent became more active when we had two penalties. It’s great that we persevered and showed character. Lots of blocked shots and courageous actions from our players.

— Did the news of Linden Wei’s departure for North America surprise you?

“We were completely unprepared for this.” It’s out of the blue. We are very worried for Linden and her family, for her child. We won’t go into details, it’s a private matter. After one of my conversations with Linden a few weeks ago, I knew there were problems. But things got worse and he had to leave.

—Is it possible for Wei to return to the team’s location? Or do you urgently need to look for a replacement in the market?

– Of course, I would like to hope that Linden will come back. Mainly due to the fact that if he came back, it would mean that everything was in order for the health of his loved ones. But for now, there is the composition that you saw. Management speaks, leads the work. But for now, these are the ones that exist.

—Why did you only take two guards for the trip?

– God willing, nothing will happen. Today, Pasha Khomchenko had an excellent match. I won’t go into details, but I think we can manage with two goalkeepers,” Zvyagin was quoted as saying by correspondent.
