NHL plans to send its players to every Winter Olympics

NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman said the league is considering allowing its players to participate regularly in the Olympics.

The 2026 Winter Olympic Games will be held from February 6 to 22, 2026 in Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo (Italy). The last time NHL players competed in the Olympic arena was at the 2014 Games in Sochi. Before that, NHL players participated in five Olympic Games: 1998 in Nagano (Japan), 2002 in Salt Lake City (United States), 2006 in Turin (Italy) and 2010 in Vancouver (Canada). The host city for the 2030 Winter Olympics will be chosen by the International Olympic Committee later this year.

— NHL plans to participate [отпускать своих игроков — Прим. ред.] in the Olympic Games every four years, and between them organize the World Cup. I think you will see the presence of the NHL on the international stage more often, ”Bettman quotes NHL portal journalist Nick Sotsonika.

By decision of the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF), the Russian national team was suspended from participation in competitions under the auspices of the organization. The current Olympic champion is the Finnish team, which defeated the Russian team in the final of the hockey tournament of the 2022 Games. The Russians are the 2018 Olympic champions.
