Sergei Zvyagin: “Introduce in Russia the same draft system as in the NHL? I think it’s absurd.”

Head Coach of the Avangard Sergei Zvyagin after the match with SKA, he called the idea of introducing a rookie draft in the KHL in the same way as it is done in the NHL absurd.

On Monday, Avangard defeated SKA in a home match with a score of 2:1.

— Good match, lots of emotions. Good speeds. We set the pace of the match in the first half. There were a lot of good moments – it’s a shame they weren’t all realized. But we took advantage of it.

The second period – the initiative passed to the opponent, our guys played several times. And it is in this context that we survived. And in the third period, we controlled the match for the most part and ultimately played well in the minority.

— What do you think of the idea of restarting the draft in the KHL?

– I’m not a superfan of this. We have a completely different system for training players. I have never delved into this subject. But it’s clear that NHL teams have nothing to do with player development. They just get them from the market.

And we have been raising hockey players since childhood. And when we introduced a project earlier, you could protect a certain number of your students, and the rest could be taken.

Schools in Yaroslavl, Kazan, Omsk and St. Petersburg invest huge amounts of money, recruit good coaches, build academies and pay great attention to this aspect. And then the guys break up?

I don’t know, maybe there will be another system? You must pay monetary compensation. But the same selection system as in the NHL, it seems to me, is absurd, ”Zvyagin was quoted as saying by a correspondent.
