Head coach of St. Petersburg SKA Romain Rotenberg commenting on the idea of introducing a rookie draft in the KHL, said that Russian hockey players should develop in local clubs.
In November, the Continental Hockey League announced the creation of a working group to study the possibility of relaunching the draft of young hockey players – the Fair.
On Monday, SKA lost to Avangard in the away match with a score of 1:2.
— What do you think about the KHL wanting to restart the rookie draft?
— I will give the example of Avangard Academy. There are many good and very strong students here. I know what work goes into raising children.
For example, Timur Kol – he lived in Moscow, graduated from CSKA. Parents take their child and invest in them. Some parents take out loans to buy uniforms. They risk everything for their son, girls also play hockey – for the sake of their children, to give the hockey player the opportunity to develop and play. There are also private schools that now also train players, and no longer just club schools.
And when the child turns 17 and someone decides his fate, and not his parents, then mom and dad will be very disappointed. We risk seeing parents stop devoting all their lives and resources to the development of their children.
There are a lot of risks here. I won’t repeat myself. We need to think about how to develop our hockey. We need brilliant matches like today. And we need kids playing hockey, because it all starts with them. Avangard Academy and other youth sports schools are striving to achieve this.
Let’s return to the example of Timur Kol. If he was taken to another city against his will, against his parents’ wishes, what would he do? What would his parents do? What if Uncle John called him? We have world-class players, we have to work differently with them. The owner of Carolina or another NHL club can call them and offer very serious terms. We must do everything to achieve this. opportunity to develop players in Russia.
This is why we need to develop players in Russia and build infrastructure. The state invests a lot of money, private funds also go there. There is a PPP format – public-private partnership. This all runs smoothly and there is no need to break anything. We are working on the development of hockey, and any wrong decision can affect its future,” Rotenberg was quoted as saying by a correspondent.
