The salary cap in the National Hockey League (NHL) could be significantly increased next season, insider Elliott Friedman said in a Sportsnet podcast.
According to the journalist, the NHL and the players’ union will discuss the changes, but it can be expected that for the upcoming season the “maximum” of club payments could be between $95 and $97 million – now it is 88 million dollars.
The current collective agreement provides for the ceiling to be increased to $92.4 million next year. Friedman says the league’s revenues currently allow it to exceed that figure.
Notably, at the end of the 2024/25 season, the contract of Russian New York Rangers goalkeeper Igor Shesterkin, with a salary of $5.6 million per year, expires. Previously, media reported that Shesterkin rejected an offer to extend his contract by eight years for a total of $88 million.
