The Russian striker scored a double in the regular season match against Utah (6:2) and took the lead in the sniper race with 15 goals.
– You see everything yourself. He looks phenomenal. He leads our team. Ovechkin is a leader not only in the locker room, but also on the ice. When you have to take the lead, when you have to score an important goal, he is always ready to take it upon himself. I repeat, his start to the season is simply phenomenal,” the coach said, as quoted by the Washington press service.
Ovechkin, 39, now has 868 regular season goals, second on the NHL’s all-time goalscoring list. The record holder is Wayne Gretzky, with 894 goals to his name.
