President of the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL) Alexey Morozov in an interview with , he said he positively assessed the publication of video recordings of conversations between referees and the team bench.
In September, the KHL established a referee development department whose task was to search for promising referees and train them for work in the KHL. The league also decided to stop inspecting referees during the season. Also this season, videos of matches appeared on the league’s social networks, showing the work of the head referees.
— There seem to be fewer complaints about the refereeing.
– That’s good, that’s what we were looking for. Let everyone focus on hockey rather than on certain refereeing scandals. This means that the judicial department is growing. Yes, everyone makes mistakes: players and coaches. Sometimes coaches even admit that they lost the match because of their mistake.
The refereeing service works clearly: after each match, the referees receive a profile with their actions, where they made a mistake, in which episode they were correctly on the field and whether they saw the moment from the right angle to make the right decision.
“It seems that the publication of videos of the referees’ conversations with the bench contributes to this. Everyone sees how it happens on the ice, you can’t guess who said who, or read lips, as is the case in football.
– Everyone loves this innovation. And sometimes it’s interesting for me to see how and what happened, how the coach speaks and what emotions he conveys to the referee, how the referee communicates.
“The pressure on judges is also decreasing; everyone understands that the conversations will become public.
– Yes. If you behave inappropriately towards the judge, all this may be published,” Morozov told .
