“He’s a key character.” Washington defenseman Carlson talks Ovechkin

Washington Defender John Carlson appointed Alexandra Ovechkina key character and team leader.

In the 2024/25 season, 39-year-old Ovechkin scored 15 goals. On Monday, he injured his leg at the end of the NHL regular season game against Utah (6:2). Later, the Washington press service announced that the Russian would return to duty after his injury “from week to week.”

“He is a key character who can change the course of matches. We’ll need other guys to fill that role. Losing such a player is particularly difficult. Many things will have to be rebuilt to compensate for the loss of irreplaceable elements. I think it added a little sadness that everyone felt about the situation. We see him come to training every day and we understand the challenges. You never want anyone to get hurt, but there’s a lot at stake here, and he’s certainly shown his best game in recent years,” Russian Machine Never Breaks quotes Carlson.

In total, Ovechkin has 868 NHL goals, 26 goals behind Wayne Gretzky’s record (894).
