Deputy Captain Toronto Maple Leafs John Tavares paid tribute to the memory of the Russian hockey player Rodrion Amirova died in August 2023 after a long battle with cancer.
Tavares took part in the “Hockey Against Cancer” campaign, during which he was photographed holding a sign with the inscription: “I fight for Rodion.”
In February 2022, Amirov, then 20 years old, was diagnosed with a brain tumor and in April of the same year the player underwent chemotherapy courses.
The forward played 79 matches with Salavat Yulaev in the KHL and scored 18 points (10+8). He was selected by Toronto in the first round, 15th overall, in the 2020 NHL Entry Draft, but did not play a single game for the Maple Leafs.
