The 23-year-old forward has been part of the Flames’ system since 2021, but has failed to break into the main team and has not played a single game in the NHL. In 2019, Calgary selected Nikolaev in the third round of the draft.
Before moving abroad, Nikolaev played in the Yaroslavl Lokomotiv system, of which he is a student.
This season, the Russian played 9 games in the AHL with the Calgary Wranglers, scoring 4 (0+4) points.
