Four-time Stanley Cup winner Wayne Gretzky filed a $10 million lawsuit over his claims he was able to lose weight by chewing gum, according to TMZ.
According to the publication, plaintiff Stephen Sparks said he created “a natural chewing gum used for weight control” and called it “OMG chewing gum.” In his lawsuit, he alleges that he hired Gretzky’s wife, Janet Marie Gretzky, to handle the promotion.
According to Sparks, the legendary NHL player lied when he said that after chewing gum for about two months, it helped him lose 35 pounds (nearly 16 kg). The plaintiff alleged that Gretzky provided false information in order to increase the value of shares “which he had secretly purchased on behalf of his family”.
Sparks noted that he didn’t know Gretzky was lying about losing weight and reinvested funds into the business. When the former Edmonton player finally admitted he had provided inaccurate information, Sparks lost a significant amount of money.
Gretzky holds numerous NHL records, being the all-time leading scorer (2,857), sharpshooter (894) and assist (2,223) in league history. Gretzky was named regular season MVP nine times.
