Double Olympic champion Vyacheslav Fetisov believes that the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) is obliged to return the Russian national team to the international stage, noting the need for compensation for damages.
The IIHF Congress will be held in Belek (Turkey) from September 29 to October 1, during which the question of the return of the Russian team to international tournaments will be raised.
– It’s a complete mess. They are forced to send us back to the international scene, they had no reason to withdraw us. Russia must realize its own, by what right we were expelled in principle. I do not think that such a clause is in the charter of the ice hockey federation. We have to pay them a big bill for the damage and the humiliation,” Fetisov told RBC Sport.
In February, the IIHF suspended the national teams of Russia and Belarus from international competitions due to the situation in Ukraine. The Russians missed the 2022 World Cup. In May, teams from both countries were also suspended from participating in the 2023 World Cup, which was moved from Russia to Latvia and Finland.
