“We are happy to have dispelled the myth of the invincibility of Canadian professionals.” Vladimir Luchenko on the 1972 Super Series

Member of the 1972 USSR Super Series – Canadian defenseman Vladimir Lutchenko said he was proud to be part of the team that dispelled the myth of the invincibility of Canadian hockey players.

– In your opinion, who is the best player of the Super Serie 72 for us and the Canadians?

– Difficult question. If for defenders, then it’s Brad Park – he was good both in defense and in attack. Very unpleasant was Phil Esposito, who played very well and was physically strong. It was impossible to push him. And so that the puck does not hit him – otherwise it’s just a goal.

The Canadians all had great players: Ivan Cournoyer, the creative Pete Mahovlich, who could easily beat a defender… You can list everyone.

– Is the 1972 USSR national team the strongest in history?

We are the team of our time. I don’t think the 70s team was better or worse. We happened to be at that time. And we are happy to have dispelled the myth of the invincibility of Canadian professionals. I’m proud to be on this team. Unfortunately, there are no more guys who were with us – they have already passed away: the great Ragulin, Gusev, Kharlamov, – said Lutchenko at a press conference at the Hockey Museum in Moscow.

The Canadian team won 4 victories in the 1972 Super Series, the USSR – 3, one meeting ended in a draw.
