Former Brazilian basketball star Hortência is leading a public vote opened by the International Basketball Federation to name the greatest female player in World Cup history.
The legendary guard is the only representative from Brazil included among nine nominees selected for the global fan poll. Basketball fans can cast their ballots directly on the official FIBA website.
The International Basketball Federation, known globally as FIBA, is the governing body for world basketball. Headquartered in Mies, Switzerland, the organization oversees international tournaments, including the quadrennial FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup.
Second Global Fan Vote for World Cup Greats
This marks the second time FIBA has organized a public vote to honor the greatest athlete in Women's Basketball World Cup history. The international federation conducted a similar poll in 2018, where Hortência was also nominated.
Hortência won the 2018 vote by a decisive margin, securing 85 percent of the total votes cast by fans worldwide. FIBA opened the current contest to celebrate the top legends across past editions of the tournament.
Eight other international stars are competing on the shortlist alongside Hortência. The ballot features five players from the United States, two from Australia, and one former athlete who represented the former Soviet Union.
The United States and the Soviet Union historically dominated international women's basketball, making the inclusion of players from those nations a reflection of the sport's traditional powerhouses.
Scoring Records and Historic 1994 World Title
Hortência holds the all-time scoring record for the Brazilian women's national basketball team. Over her international career, she scored 3,160 points across 127 official matches for her country.
Her career peak came at the 1994 World Championship in Australia, where she anchored Brazil's run to an unprecedented world championship. The tournament stands as Brazil's only gold medal finish in Women's World Cup history.
During the 1994 tournament, Brazil defeated the United States in the semi-finals before beating China in the final match to secure the title. The semi-final victory over the Americans ended a long streak of US dominance in international play.
Olympic Silver Medal and Hall of Fame Legacy
Two years after her World Championship triumph, Hortência won a silver medal at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta, Georgia. The Atlanta Olympics marked her final official appearance for the Brazilian national team.
Throughout her international career, Hortência formed an iconic playing partnership with guard Magic Paula. Together, the pair led Brazil through its most successful era in international women's basketball.
Both players have earned international recognition with inductions into the FIBA Hall of Fame. FIBA enshrined Hortência in 2005, while Magic Paula was inducted in 2013.
The FIBA Hall of Fame honors athletes, coaches, and officials who have made lasting contributions to basketball worldwide. Voting for the current contest remains open to fans on FIBA's official website.
