Premier League club Ipswich Town will regularly monitor their players' urine samples following a £30m renovation of their Playford Road training facility, as the club seeks a competitive edge over top-flight rivals.

The Suffolk-based club broke ground on the extensive construction project just under 12 months ago to modernise infrastructure for its senior men's and women's teams, while enhancing its capacity to attract and develop academy talent.

Before the upgrade, the Playford Road site had not undergone a major renovation since the early 2000s. Upon Ipswich's promotion to the Premier League at the start of the 2024-25 season, the complex was out-of-date and no longer fit for purpose, forcing squad members to split time between original buildings and temporary Portakabin units.

The team, known as the Tractor Boys, will now embark on their latest attempt to remain in England's top division from luxurious surroundings designed to ease the step up from the Championship.

High-tech urinals and medical equipment

According to the East Anglian Daily Times, Ipswich have installed specialised technical urinals across player areas. Squad members must sign in before using the facilities, allowing sports science analysts to inspect samples and continuously track individual dehydration levels.

The club has also introduced specialised boot-drying technology of the kind used by ski resorts in Austria. Additionally, medical staff have imported a bone density scanner from the United States to allow comprehensive physical examinations to be conducted directly on site.

Ipswich Town's new £30m training facility played a role in tempting Gary O'Neil to join the club

Further renovations inside player areas feature a newly constructed hydrotherapy pool, hyperbaric recovery chambers, and cold plunge pools for post-match rehabilitation. The complex also incorporates a state-of-the-art fitness gym and a specialized altitude training room.

Attracting top talent to Portman Road

Speaking to the East Anglian Daily Times, Ipswich Town chairman Mark Ashton said he believes the overhauled Playford Road grounds are unmatched across the region.

"There's nothing like this in east of England," Ashton said. "You probably have to go as far as Tottenham to find something on this level."

Ashton highlighted how the updated facilities have transformed player recruitment, contrasting the new setup with previous pitch attempts during transfer negotiations.

"Is it helping attract players? For sure," Ashton said. "I remember standing with Liam Delap in a muddy field here trying to sell him the vision. Now I'm not having to tell prospective signings that there's something going to come two years down the line, maybe, if we get planning permission."

Management changes and financial backing

Ashton added that the completed training complex played a pivotal role in pitching the manager's position to Gary O'Neil, who joined Ipswich from French Ligue 1 side Strasbourg earlier in the summer.

The investment forms part of a broader commercial expansion at Ipswich Town, which began when American investment fund ORG acquired the club in 2021.

Subsequent investors Three Lions and Clara Vista Partners later joined through Portman Holdings LLC, which officially established itself as the club's majority shareholder in December 2025.

Summer transfer window activity

Determined to ensure that their current Premier League spell does not end as sharply as their last turn in the top flight, Ipswich have also invested heavily in squad recruitment.

O'Neil has reunited with two of his former Strasbourg players, securing forward Julio Enciso and winger Abdoul Ouattara in a joint transfer deal estimated to be worth up to £47.3m.

The double acquisition follows a busy summer transfer window for the Portman Road club, who had already completed deals for ten new players prior to the latest arrivals.
