Polish goalkeeper Kamil Grabara has joined Italian giants Juventus on loan from German club VfL Wolfsburg. The 27-year-old Polish international moves to the 36-time Italian champions after spending two seasons playing in Germany.
Grabara was unable to prevent Wolfsburg from suffering relegation last season, but his individual performances in goal impressed several European clubs. Belgian side Club Brugge and French outfit Olympique Marseille were among the teams seeking to secure his signature before Juventus completed the deal.
Following the announcement of the move, Wolfsburg published a social media message wishing Grabara every success in his new challenge and an enjoyable time during his stay in Italy.
On their official website, Wolfsburg acknowledged Grabara's contributions since arriving at the club in the summer of 2024 from Danish team FC Copenhagen. The Lower Saxony club noted that he made 69 total appearances across the Bundesliga, the DFB-Pokal German Cup and relegation play-offs, before wishing him the best both sportingly and personally during his spell in Turin.
Loan terms and goalkeeper competition in Turin
Juventus, who are based in Turin and play in Italy's top-flight Serie A, also officially announced the signing on their website, welcoming the Polish goalkeeper as a new reinforcement for the position. The Italian club recalled Grabara's career path, noting his time in Liverpool's youth academy, loan spells at Danish side Aarhus GF and English team Huddersfield Town, two Danish league titles won with Copenhagen, and his two seasons at Wolfsburg.
According to media reports, Juventus have secured an option to purchase Grabara on a permanent deal as part of the loan agreement. The buy option is reported to be worth 12 million euros.
Grabara will compete for the starting position between the posts with Italian goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario, who joined Juventus on loan from Premier League club Tottenham Hotspur just a week earlier. Vicario started in goal for Juventus during their opening match of the Serie A season, a 1-0 victory over Frosinone, but was taken off late in the game as a precautionary measure shortly before the final whistle.
Praise from Boniek and prospective Serie A debut
Former Polish international Zbigniew Boniek, who played for Juventus during the 1980s, evaluated the transfer positively. Boniek stated that the move is beneficial if Grabara secures regular playing time, but noted it remains a valuable transfer even if he serves as a backup goalkeeper, as joining a club of Juventus's stature provides exceptional opportunities for development.
Head coach Luciano Spalletti must now decide on his starting goalkeeper ahead of Juventus's upcoming league fixture against Parma on Saturday, August 29. The match offers Grabara an immediate opportunity to make his official debut for the club in front of his new home supporters in Turin.
