Manchester City have edged Arsenal six players to five in a Sofascore combined XI ahead of their Community Shield clash in Cardiff.

The fixture at the Principality Stadium marks the first meeting of the new campaign between Premier League champions Arsenal and Enzo Maresca's Manchester City. With the top-flight season less than two weeks away, statistical analysis from Sofascore has produced an ideal starting line-up in a 4-3-3 formation following a summer of skyrocketing transfer prices.

Who will lift the trophy come next summer remains to be seen, but all the early signs are pointing towards two clear favourites: Premier League champions Arsenal and Man City

The combined team highlights six players from Manchester City and five from Arsenal as both clubs prepare to battle for one of the most prestigious prizes in English football.

With their first clash of the new campaign getting under way today in Cardiff, the stats gurus over at Sofascore have given the lowdown on both teams, building an ideal combined XI

Defensive Lineup and Goalkeeper Choices

Manchester City goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma takes the spot between the posts with a Sofascore rating of 7.02 out of 10. The 6ft 5in Italian and former Paris Saint-Germain number one enjoyed a successful debut season in England despite some hairy moments, keeping 15 clean sheets in the Premier League as City narrowly missed out on the title.

Donnarumma was selected over Arsenal counterpart David Raya, who won the Premier League Golden Glove award last season. Both goalkeepers enter the match aiming to establish dominance ahead of the new domestic campaign.

It is fair to say that, despite some hairy moments, Donnarumma¿s debut season in England was largely a success

At right-back, Manchester City's Matheus Nunes earned a 6.95 rating to beat out Arsenal defender Jurrien Timber. Originally signed as a central midfielder, the Portuguese international was transformed by former City manager Pep Guardiola into a modern inverted wing-back whose composure and ball progression provide options for Maresca.

Nunes has won five trophies in three years at City, including a Premier League title, an FA Cup, a Carabao Cup and a FIFA Club World Cup. If City defeat Arsenal, Nunes will lift his sixth trophy with the club in three years.

Nunes¿ contributions for City have, for years, been underappreciated and overshadowed by the brilliance of his predecessor, Kyle Walker

Central Defence and Full-Back Selections

Arsenal centre-back Gabriel is the only defender from the Premier League champions to make the combined XI, scoring a 7.27 rating. The Brazilian was among the top performers in his position last season and will renew his ongoing rivalry with City striker Erling Haaland.

Haaland holds the upper hand in their recent meetings after scoring twice to eliminate Gabriel's Brazil side from the World Cup. Gabriel will look for revenge as the two square off once again following three years of title deciders and cup finals.

Partnering Gabriel in central defence is Manchester City's Marc Guehi, who recorded a 7.30 rating. The England international and Cobham graduate joined City from Crystal Palace in January and was selected with Arsenal centre-back William Saliba unable to play at the Principality Stadium.

Guehi combines the technical ability of an attacking midfielder with efficient defensive play, placing him at the centre of City's efforts to keep Arsenal at bay.

If City are to keep the Premier League champions at bay in Cardiff, Guehi will be at the epicentre of their resistance

Croatia international Josko Gvardiol completes the back line at left-back with a 6.99 rating. The 24-year-old missed the second half of last season with a tibial fracture but returned to form during City's pre-season friendly against Atletico Madrid.

Maresca is expected to use Gvardiol in an inverted full-back role similar to the position assigned to him by Guardiola, where the former traditional centre-back has developed into a goal-scoring and assist-providing defender over the past two seasons.

The last member of a stellar combined defence is the versatile Croatian, Josko Gvardiol

Big-Money Midfield Battles

Arsenal captain Declan Rice anchors the midfield with a 7.46 rating after leading the club to the Premier League title. Signed for more than £105 million in 2023, the midfielder has consistently delivered defensive quality alongside goals and assists in major matches.

Rice will attempt to secure his second Community Shield victory and the 18th in Arsenal's history during the fixture in Cardiff.

Anchoring what is a truly world-class midfield is the man who epitomises elite consistency in the Premier League today: Declan Rice

City's £115 million summer signing Elliot Anderson joins Rice in midfield after posting a 7.34 rating. The former Nottingham Forest player featured for England during the summer following a season spent fighting relegation.

Known for press resistance and precise passing and shooting, Anderson could make his competitive City debut in Cardiff against Arsenal's midfield line.

If selected this weekend, it will be Anderson's competitive City debut, and he will be thrown in at the deep end against that Arsenal midfield

Arsenal midfielder Bruno Guimaraes completes the central trio with a 7.45 rating following his £75 million transfer from Newcastle United. The former Newcastle captain joined Mikel Arteta's squad after a summer-long transfer saga to strengthen Arsenal's title defence.

Arteta faces the tactical challenge of integrating the Brazilian alongside Rice due to their similar playing profiles in the center of the pitch.

The former Newcastle skipper completes a truly frightening Arsenal midfield that, with both quality and depth, is poised to begin the defence of its title

Attacking Trio and New Additions

Bukayo Saka takes the right wing position for Arsenal with a 7.24 rating. The England winger, who featured in his country's third-place play-off at the World Cup, maintained his output following Arsenal's Premier League title win.

Saka's level of consistency over the past four seasons has given fans unrealistic expectations of the winger, yet he still meets them

Erling Haaland leads the attack with a 7.31 rating after leading Norway to their first World Cup quarter-final. The striker holds a strong record against Arsenal, scoring five goals and providing two assists in nine appearances against them for City.

The match offers the first insight into how Maresca will deploy Haaland, with the new manager indicating his tactical approach will not replicate Guardiola's methods.

The Norwegian has a stellar record against the Gunners, scoring five goals and registering two assists in the nine matches he has played against them while at City

Arsenal new arrival Christos Tzolis claims the left wing spot with the highest rating in the entire combined XI at 7.71. The Greek international previously spent three years at Norwich City, suffering relegation in 2022, before joining Club Brugge where he won three trophies in two seasons and was named Pro League Player of the Year last season.

Tzolis enters the match with statistical backing to create significant difficulties for Nunes along the flank.
