Arizona State University hockey player Matthew Mayich remains hospitalized after collapsing during an outdoor training session in Tempe, Arizona, last Thursday morning.
A person close to his family confirmed to The Athletic on Tuesday evening that the 21-year-old defenseman was still receiving treatment in hospital. Arizona State University did not name Mayich directly due to privacy interests, but officials confirmed that an investigation into the collapse is underway.
Chris Fiscus, Vice President of ASU media relations, stated that the university is reviewing the outdoor workout Mayich participated in on campus.
"A student-athlete who collapsed during an outdoor exercise Thursday morning remains hospitalized," Fiscus said. "The student-athlete, a member of the ASU hockey team, is not being named by the university because of privacy interests. The university is reviewing the circumstances surrounding the workout."
Fiscus reportedly declined to answer whether the workout was formally sanctioned by the hockey team.
Under National Collegiate Athletic Association rules, college hockey teams are permitted to start formal activities once university classes begin. Arizona State's fall semester began last Thursday, the morning of the incident.
Tempe Fire Medical Rescue responded to calls of a heat-related illness at around 8:31 a.m. at 400 S. Rural Road, the address for Sun Angel Stadium. The outdoor track and field facility is located on the university campus in Tempe.
Emergency crews treated Mayich on site before transporting him to a local hospital for further care.
Heat warning and family response
Mayich's family expressed gratitude for the support shown since his hospitalization.
"Even though we are going through this heartbreak, it is truly such a blessing to see everyone praying and just the impact Matthew has had on so many people," his cousin, Victoria Beara, said according to The Arizona Republic.
The collapse occurred amid an extreme heat warning in Phoenix that has lasted for the past week. Temperatures on Thursday averaged 92.5 degrees Fahrenheit, reaching an afternoon high of 106 degrees.
Career background and NHL draft
Mayich, a sophomore defenseman from Ontario, Canada, joined Arizona State this offseason after transferring from Clarkson University.
He was selected by the St. Louis Blues in the sixth round of the 2023 National Hockey League Draft. Mayich attended prospect camps with the Blues in 2023 and 2024, but did not sign an entry-level contract with the team.
Before entering college athletics, Mayich completed a four-year junior career in the Ontario Hockey League with the Ottawa 67s. He then played the 2025-26 collegiate season for Clarkson in Potsdam, New York, scoring 15 points on seven goals and eight assists.
Following the end of last season, Mayich announced in March that he would transfer to Arizona State for the upcoming season.
