American boxer Mikaela Mayer faces British rival Chantelle Cameron in a world super welterweight title unification fight at Birmingham's bp pulse LIVE arena on Saturday, August 29.
The main event bout headlines the MVPW-06 card, which will be broadcast live on Sky Sports as part of a UK versus USA team matchup. Mayer holds the WBA and WBC titles, while Cameron enters as the WBO champion.
Mayer, 36, declared that she feels "unbeatable" ahead of her trip across the Atlantic. Despite expecting a hostile reception from the Birmingham crowd, the American insisted the fight will not be as competitive as many expect.
"I feel better than ever," Mayer told Sky Sports. "I just know I just feel unbeatable right now. I feel in a great position and I can't wait to get out to the UK and do my thing."
Mayer acknowledged Cameron's aggressive fighting style but argued that her own technical adjustments will prove decisive. Cameron, 35, enters the contest with a professional record of 22 wins and one loss with eight knockouts.
"[Cameron] is good at what she does. She's an aggressive fighter. She lets her hands go," Mayer said. "She fights at a fast pace and so do I. So that's going to make for a very exciting fight for the fans. But I just don't think it's going to be as close and as much of a war as everyone thinks."
Fighter records and ring activity
Mayer brings a record of 22 wins and two losses with five knockouts into Saturday's bout. Although she has not fought since last October, the American spent the last 10 months developing new skills in the gym.
Mayer pointed to her versatility as a defining factor, stating that Cameron will encounter a transformed opponent. "I'm really hard to train for because I've developed so much these last 10 months of being in the gym," Mayer told Sky Sports. "I know I haven't fought since last October but the things I'm doing now, it's really impossible for Chantelle to have trained for me at this point."
Addressing the prospect of fighting in front of Cameron's home fans in England, Mayer expressed complete confidence in her game plan. "There's probably a handful of people who think I'm stupid for coming to the UK and going onto Chantelle's turf, but I'm just confident in myself right now," she said.
"I'm fighting better than I've ever fought, smarter than I've ever been. And I just believe in myself. I feel like no matter where I go, I'm still going to kick butt. So it could be here. It could be there. I'm taking the win."
Mayer indicated she plans to deliver a dominant performance, while anticipating intense exchanges in the ring. "I'm going to do everything I can to make it a very obvious win, maybe a stoppage, we'll see, but I know I'm coming out with my hand raised," Mayer said.
"I've worked on making sure that my inside game and when I do press forward that my defence is tighter and I'm the one landing my shots," she added. "I'll definitely be using a little bit of everything I've got, but knowing mine and Chantelle's styles there will definitely be moments where it will be a dog fight."
Title history and career significance
The WBO belt now held by Cameron previously belonged to Mayer, who vacated the title months after winning it against Mary Spencer. Cameron claimed the vacant crown in April with a dominant victory over Michaela Kotaskova.
Cameron has built a four-fight winning streak since suffering her lone career loss in a 2023 rematch against Katie Taylor. Cameron remains highly regarded as the only boxer to have defeated Taylor in professional competition.
For Mayer, reclaiming the WBO belt to unify the division represents a landmark milestone. "[A win would be] definitely up there with one of the best [moments]," Mayer said. "I've had a pretty awesome career. Even though I've gone through some ups and downs, I think that's what makes my career even more special and what makes these big fights that are ahead of me extra special."
"I've had to go through trials and tribulations; I've had to adjust, I've had to make changes in my team and keep continuing to get better, and I've done that," Mayer explained. "Going in there and having a dominating performance against someone like Chantelle Cameron, who is very highly respected, the only person to beat Katie Taylor, that's going to definitely be one of the best moments of my career thus far."
Rematch clause and event schedule
Mayer revealed that the fight contract contains a bilateral rematch clause for both competitors. "Well, Chantelle and I do have a rematch clause on both of our ends, which is unique, but if it's the type of fight that everyone expects, then why not do a rematch?" Mayer said. "Why not give it to the world again? I have no problem giving a rematch when it's, when it's justified."
"Do I want to kick her butt so bad that she doesn't even want to activate that rematch clause? Of course. But if she does, we can go again," Mayer added.
Cameron stated that she has waited a long time for a marquee matchup against Mayer to put their world titles on the line, adding that she cannot wait to fight in Birmingham on August 29.
The MVPW-06 main card features a complete roster of UK versus USA matchups. Alongside the headlining unification clash, British fighter Caroline Dubois faces American opponent Amelia Moore, with both boxers having faced off ahead of Saturday's event.
Professional boxing unification bouts combine titles from major sanctioning bodies, including the WBA, WBC, and WBO, to establish an undisputed or unified leader in a division. The super welterweight category sets an upper weight limit of 154 pounds.
