Swedish pole vaulter Armand Duplantis said he felt sympathy for the Russian athlete Timur Morgunov who cannot participate in the international departures due to the decision of the World Athletics Association (World Athletics).
“It’s a difficult situation for him. Yes, it’s hard not to sympathize with him. He’s a very talented athlete and he was very good,” Duplantis said as quoted by NRK.
The Olympic champion did not comment on the withdrawal of the Russians from international competitions.
– This is a difficult question. It is difficult to judge what is fair and what is not. So I’m glad I don’t have to make that decision. I have no opinion on this. I can understand both sides,” added Duplantis.
Morgunov is the 2018 European Championship silver medalist.
World Athletics announced in March the suspension of Russian and Belarusian athletes from international competitions due to the situation in Ukraine.
