Italian Giorgio Scarso has been elected president of the European Fencing Confederation (EFC), reports the organization’s press service.
Scarso won the vote, which took place in Warsaw on Saturday at an extraordinary congress of the EFC. 24 delegates voted in favor of the Italian, while his rival, EFC vice-president and head of the Icelandic Fencing Federation Nikolai Mateev, got 20 votes. Another candidate, Pascal Tesch from Luxembourg, withdrew from the election before voting began.
The last leader of the EFC was a Russian Stanislav Pozdnyakov who has led the organization since 2016 and was re-elected for a new term in 2021. In May, the EFC congress voted to terminate his powers within the organization early.
