Three-time Olympic champion Shishkina: ‘I think a lot of teams won’t put men in groups for now’

Three-time Olympic synchronized swimming champion Alla Shishkina said that so far few national teams would dare to put a man in the squad for group competitions.

The Technical Congress of the International Swimming Federation (FINA) has approved changes to the rules of this sport. They concern the content of the programs, the evaluations and the judging system. He also voted for the possibility of including men in group competitions. Previously, group competitions at the World Championships, European Championships and Olympic Games were exclusively for women. The men have only played as a mixed pair at the World and European Championships.

– In my opinion, it is too early, but, as I understand it, there is a choice – you can bet or you can’t bet. I think a lot of people won’t put men in bands yet and will stick to male mixes and solos. And in 5-10 years, men will already look good in women’s groups, a new generation will grow up. Few years have passed since 2015 so far,” Shishkina told , commenting on the technical committee’s decision on the possibility of entering men in group competitions.

– Will the new judging rules affect the choreographic component of the composition?

– I don’t think in the choreography, but in the general feeling of the compositions, it will get lost. Everyone will try to do the harder items as a blueprint in order to get higher points. A few interesting matings, new supports that are not in the list, beautiful planes simply will not have good results. For me it’s sad. I think the audience won’t be so interesting to watch now. But let’s wait and see.
