Rules for men’s admission to group competitions in synchronized swimming come into effect from 2023

The new synchronized swimming rules will come into force on January 1, 2023, the first vice-president of the Russian Synchronized Swimming Federation tells Olga Brusnikina.

The Technical Congress of the International Swimming Federation (FINA) has approved changes to refereeing in synchronized swimming. The vote took place in an online meeting on this issue. The changes relate to the content of the programs, the scoring principles and the system for monitoring the implementation of the elements. All of the rule changes were passed by a single vote. In particular, among the changes is the possibility of including men in group competitions.

– Are the rules effective as soon as they are adopted?

— No, from January 1, 2023.

– That is to say, purely theoretically, that the men of the groups at the world championships can make their debut at the world championship in Fukuoka?

– Yes it is.

These rule changes also apply to the Olympic Games. Does it require the approval of the International Olympic Committee?

“It is still difficult to say what the next procedure will be. But today, when it comes to the Olympics and the selection for the Paris Games, men are not mentioned in the quotas, Brusnikina said.

Previously, group competitions at the World Championships, in Europe and at the Olympics were purely female, men performed only in mixed pairs.
