FINA Technical Congress approves inclusion of men in synchronized swimming groups

The Technical Congress of the International Swimming Federation (FINA) has voted to include men in the synchronized swimming group competition.

Voting took place online. All of the rule changes were passed by a single vote. Previously, group competitions at the World Championships, in Europe and at the Olympics were purely female, men performed only in mixed pairs.

– It turns out that they voted for the inclusion of men in group competitions at the same time?

– Yes. For all the proposals that have been published, the first vice-president of the Russian Synchronized Swimming Federation told Olga Brusnikina.

– Did I understand correctly that it is not necessary for a man to participate in group competitions? It’s just an opportunity to put a man in a group of women.

– It really is.

– Can we put a man in the group?

– This is a question for Tatyana Nikolaevna (Pokrovskaya). Those who have good athletes, I think, will try to do it. But it will not add any score. In addition to Sasha Maltsev, as practice shows, all other athletes in their qualifications lag behind the athletes of the women’s team. Here the question is for the coaches, will they take risks. Perhaps for some programs, for example, acrobatic groups, it will be interesting to do this.
