The Norwegian Ski Association may boycott the competition if Russian athletes are allowed to compete

The Norwegian Ski Association will consider the possibility of boycotting international competitions if Russian athletes are allowed to participate, said the head of the organization, Tove Mo Dürhaug.

At the end of February, the executive committee of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) recommended that federations ban Russian and Belarusian athletes from participating in competitions because of the situation in Ukraine. The International Ski Federation (FIS) has followed these recommendations. Athletes from both countries have been suspended until the end of the summer season, a decision on the winter season has yet to be made. At the end of September, the secretary general of the FIS, Michel Vion, did not exclude that the athletes of the two countries could be authorized to participate in the international departures in a neutral status by December.

Dürhaug answered in the affirmative when asked if the Norwegian Ski Association would think of a boycott if the competitions were opened to the participation of Russian and Belarusian athletes this winter.

“Yes, it’s true, we will have to discuss it,” Dyurhaug quotes Dagbladet. “We want officials and athletes (from Russia) suspended while hostilities continue. It’s too early to tell (whether the boycott will affect all sports for which the association is responsible), but there is no doubt about our position in this situation.

The Norwegian Ski Association is responsible for alpine skiing, cross-country skiing, ski jumping, mountain combined and freestyle.
