Para-swimmer Aleksey Talai: ‘I motivate those who have arms and legs, even if I myself don’t have either’

Belarusian swimmer Aleksey Talai told how he motivates perfectly healthy people, despite the absence of limbs, and also shared his emotions after winning the summer games “We are together. Sport”.

On Thursday, Talai won the 200m medley at a competition in Sochi.

– In Sochi, you supported the reputation of the championship, get ready for the award ceremony. Was it difficult?

– Thank goodness parents, friends, coaches and fans: I won the toughest 200m individual medley. Few people take this distance, but I did everything right: I rested, I ate, I plugged in. And everything worked. I really liked the atmosphere: the friendly country of Russia, Sochi, the mountains, the thuja, the clean air. Everything gave strength,” Talai said.

“Sorry, but you have absolutely nothing to row. How did you come to swim?

– Already a mature person, an entrepreneur, a father of three children, now they are four. He performed all over the world as a motivational speaker, but something was missing. I accidentally met the head coach of the Paralympic swimming team Gennady Vishnyakov on a talk show. I realized it was Providence when I found myself in an audience with disabled children and their parents. I understood a lot when I saw their tears, their joy and their surprise at what I said. I did it as an athlete, not just as “go, go, win.” Now, there are many new kinds of motivators, but I spoke as someone who has come down this path, with experience and practice. He was already a master of the sport, holder of world and European records, but without legs and arms. The opportunities offered by life can be realized in all conditions, and this has been passed on to children.

In Russia and Belarus, fortunately, there is a chance to come true, so it is not shameful and even right for us physically disabled people to be motivators for those who, perhaps, with legs and arms, but do not want Direct. Who’s lying on canapes with beer and belly, burning through life.

– In 1999, a World War II shell exploded next to you, that’s why you are called the last victim of this war. They have surely wondered many times: could fate save us from a nightmare?

– I asked – and answered: I could not. It is a point of reference, intended from above. Events of this order are written in nature, they will somehow happen to a person, if he is destined. Birth, family formation, severe trauma are planned in heaven even before a person comes into the world. It cannot be avoided.

Remembering this situation, it’s easy to be a hero, but the question was more difficult: can a 16-year-old boy survive and accept himself. Remember Tsoi: “Can you accept him as he is? Get up and get out of the way? Do you sit in the electric chair or on the throne? I could. And today, I try to share my knowledge with others.

The Paralympic swimming competitions take place in the outdoor swimming pool of the Grand Hotel Polyana in Estosadok and will end on October 8.
