Coach Dobroskokov: “If you want to do pair skating, get in the weight”

Russian figure skating coach Sergei Dobroskokov has explained why athletes competing in pair skating need to watch their weight.

– How do you get around a painful question for skateboarders when you have to tell a girl she’s overweight? Do you speak openly or do you have to choose your words carefully?

“I’m just explaining that we don’t do bobsleigh after all. The partner is fine, he will always raise the girl – in the room where he is engaged. But the shows aren’t going anywhere. There, the height, wingspan, load increase five times on landing. A kilogram of excess weight – your knees, count, flew – and that’s it, it’s over with big sport.

So you just have to decide for yourself: if you want to do pair skating, get in the weight. I give criteria. For pair skating, the difference between height and weight should be 114-115 for a girl. It is impossible to stay within this framework – you can always start dancing or even change sports,” Dobroskokov told RT.

Dobroskokov trained European Championship bronze medalists Daria Pavlyuchenko and Denis Khodykin.
