In the near future, we should expect a technical breakthrough in pair skating, says figure skating coach Dobroskokov

Russian figure skating coach Sergei Dobroskokov shared his opinion that in the near future we should expect a technical breakthrough for sports pairs, and also indicated which skaters can perform the most difficult elements.

– What should happen in pair skating to massively increase the complexity of jumps, throws and spins? Should we expect a technical breakthrough in the near future?

– In show jumping, definitely yes. Already, some couples have the whole arsenal of triplets, there are more and more skaters who jump well, and it is clear that this generation is the future. Outliers are a more specific thing. The International Skating Union could encourage the process of their complication by revising the cost of ultra-if elements, but this can lead to a very decent injury rate. It’s one thing when powers like China or Russia engage in the development of quads, where there are enough very high-level coaches and specialists, and it’s another thing for small countries. European countries, where even a single serious traumatic event can shut everything down.

– Of the pairs currently skating, which do you think is closest to shaking the world with difficulty?

– If Chinese Olympic champions Sui Wenjing and Han Cong are remembered for performing the quadruple twist, they were ahead of the world in technology when they were still skating as juniors. Therefore, it seems to me that it makes sense to pay attention to athletes who are on their way now, ”said RT Dobroskokov.

At the 2022 Olympic Games in Beijing, the Chinese sports couple Sui Wenjing – Han Cong updated the world record for the sum of short and free programs – 239.88 points.
