Famous Cuban baseball player reappointed as head coach of Russia’s women’s softball team

According to , a meeting of the Presidium of the Russian Softball Federation was held in Moscow, one of the decisions was the extension of the powers of the head coach of the women’s national team, David Castillo, the famous Cuban baseball player who received Russian citizenship in 2019.

David Castillo (his full name found in the documents is David Alejandro Castillo Velazquez) is 34 years old. From 2005 to 2014, he played in the Cuban national baseball series for one of the most successful teams in the country, the Vegueros de Pinar del Rio. Role Castillo – second baseman and shortstop. With his participation, the club won two titles of the strongest team in Cuba – in 2011 and 2015 (these were the club’s first and so far last league victories in the 21st century).

In 2019, he received Russian citizenship. He played for the baseball club “RusStar”, in which he became the champion of the country, and also played for the Russian national team. Since 2021, he has been the head coach of the national softball team.

Softball is back at the 2020 Olympics, the 2024 Olympics will be without softball, but it will return to the Games in 2028 in Los Angeles. Russian athletes have never participated in the Olympic tournament so far.
