Legkov: “FIS can organize competitions without Russian skiers, but it will be a disaster”

The possible non-admission of Russian skiers to the international starts of the new season is a purely political moment that could turn into a disaster for this sport, the Olympic champion told . Alexander Legkov .

On Saturday, a meeting of the Council of the International Ski Federation (FIS) will take place, during which a decision will be made on the participation of Russian athletes in the 2022/23 season. Earlier, Ski Racing Federation President Elena Vyalbe told that FIS President Johan Eliash told her that Scandinavian countries would deny Russian skiers entry even if they were allowed to start.

– They can organize competitions without our athletes, but then it will be a disaster. In recent years, Russia and Norway have dominated cross-country skiing, the sharing of opinions was huge, especially thanks to our skiers. Such statements are purely political moment. They are opposed to the country, but the athletes should not suffer. If Russian athletes are not allowed, cross-country skiing will disappear from the radar. I have a negative attitude to such statements and I want our athletes to perform well,” Legkov told .

The first stage of the new season’s World Cup will take place from November 25 to 27 in Finland’s Ruka.
