The UCI has previously announced that it will not recognize the results of the elections organized by Alexander Bashenko
Yaroslav Popovichformer professional racing driver and current Trek-Segafredo World Tour team sporting director, elected as new president Ukrainian Cycling Federation.
The elections were held at the FVSU conference in a mixed mode offline (in Kropyvnytskyi) and online on November 4. The delegates voted almost unanimously to elect Popovich (one regional association abstained).
Formerly Union Cyclists Internationale (UCI) sent a letter to local cycling associationsin which he indicated that does not recognize elections at the general assembly scheduled for 4 November. The conference was convened by the current president of the FVSU Alexander Bashenko, who was suspended by the UCI from activities.
Recall that Bashenko headed the FVSU in 2019, when he was removed from his post due to a scandal. The UCI suspended the official for 9 months from the day he actually starts working in the field of cycling. Subsequently, Alexander Bashenko challenged the decision to remove himself from the presidency through the court and again headed the Federation in June 2023.
Based on the current situation, the UCI recognized Bashenko as the leader and activated the ban, which expires in April 2023. At the time of suspension, the Federation is headed by Vice-President Andrei Grivko as acting. president.
Grivko, in turn, also plans to convene a conference to elect a new president of the FVSU. Meeting planned on November 15 in Kyiv.
