FINA’s independent ethics committee has suspended former European Swimming League (LEN) president Paolo Barelli for two years, FINA’s press office has announced.
Barelli is also president of the Italian Swimming Federation (FIN).
– The allegations of misdemeanor that the FINA Ethics Commission investigated against Mr. Barelli included numerous violations of the rules of the FINA Constitution and the FINA Code of Ethics:
– unilateral signature of an amendment to the contract between LEN and FIN, which will provide the latter with a benefit of between 500,000 and 1,500,000 euros.
– a request for reimbursement of expenses totaling EUR 495,587.22 from the Italian Olympic Committee on behalf of the FIN, although they have already been paid by the Italian Ministry of Economy and Finance. The Court of Appeal of the Italian Court of Auditors found that this caused material damage.
The suspension is counted from September 14, 2022, the start date of the provisional suspension.
