Binyam Ghirmay was able to go down cycling history twice in a matter of minutes.

Life is a white stripe, a black stripe. Cyclist Binyam Girmai is convinced of this from his own bitter experience. The representative of the “Intermarche Wanty Gobert” team was able to enter the history of the sport twice in a matter of minutes.

First on the good side: the Eritrean won stage 10 of the 2022 Giro d’Italia and became the first black Grand Tour stage winner.

However, the joy of such success is short -lived. Minutes later, the 22-year-old athlete unsuccessfully opened champagne at the awards ceremony and shot him with cork in the eye itself.

The blow was so strong that the celebration stopped immediately. The medical team on race duty examined the eye and, together with team representatives, decided to send the unfortunate winner to the hospital.

Girmay could not see due to bleeding in the anterior chamber of the eye. As a result of the incident, the stage organizers had to cancel the traditional press conference with the race winners.

The hospital found that the injury did not threaten the rider’s vision and discharged him. The athlete returned to the hotel with a tight bandage on his left eye. He still doesn’t see, and therefore he doesn’t go to the start of the 11th stage of the cycling race.
