Former Australian swimmer Scott Miller has been sentenced to five years and six months in prison by the District Court in the Australian state of New South Wales in a drug trafficking case, ABC reports.
Miller, who turns 48 in February, was found guilty along with his accomplices Wayne Allan Johnson, 49, and Justin Sabolic, 47, who also pleaded guilty to multiple counts including supplying methamphetamine and heroin and participation in a criminal group. Sabolic is sentenced to three years and nine months in prison, Johnson will be released from prison and will have to perform community service. Miller will become eligible to seek parole in February 2024.
In January 2021, the court heard that Miller’s car had a secret compartment he used to transport methamphetamine hidden in eight candles. The police followed Miller and Johnson on a trip to Iasi, through hidden cameras installed in the car, where they gave the drugs and the car to Sabolic and another man who had already been convicted. In February of that year, heroin, several cell phones, and over $72,000 worth of illegal activity were discovered in Miller’s home, hidden in a bag and a safe.
During sentencing, Judge Penelope Hawke said Miller was a successful athlete whose mental health issues began when he moved at the age of 15 and began training at the ‘Australian Institute of Sports.
“These issues persisted over the next few years and at the very least contributed to his drug addiction,” Hock said.
According to her, Miller started using more drugs after quitting swimming in 2004, her mental health was also affected by the collapse of her business during the coronavirus pandemic.
Miller won silver in the 100m butterfly and bronze in the 4x100m medley relay at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta. He also has several medals at the World Short Course Swimming Championships.
