Britain’s Birmingham will host the European Athletics Championships in 2026, according to website European Athletics Association (EA).
This decision was taken at the EA Council in Warsaw. In June, it was reported that Budapest was another candidate for the right to host the tournament.
The competition will take place at the new Alexander Stadium, which hosted the 2022 Commonwealth Games. Britain has for the first time received the right to host the European Summer Championship, tournaments have been held since 1934. Birmingham has already hosted the European and World Indoor Championships.
“The British fans are passionate and enthusiastic, they know athletics well around the world. We saw that recently at the Commonwealth Games, where the stands were packed even in the morning.
We are confident that Europe’s top athletes will compete every day in packed stands in front of huge TV audiences, not just in Europe but around the world,” said EA Director Dobromir Karamarinov.
The next European Championship will be held in Rome from June 7 to 12, 2024.
The European U20 Championship 2023 has been moved from the Romanian city of Cluj-Napoca to Jerusalem, and in 2025 the tournament will be held in Tampere (Finland).
