Russia may appeal
International Paralympic Committee (IPC) has decided to suspend the membership of the Russian Paralympic Committee.
The organization emphasized that the Russian Federation is unable to “fulfill its obligations in accordance with the rules of the IPC.” At the same time, Russia has the right to appeal against the decision of the IPC.
Only the Committee’s General Assembly has the authority to overrule a decision of the International Paralympic Committee. The next meeting of the IPC is scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2023.
Recall that earlier the International Olympic Committee upheld the sanctions against Russian athletes. At international competitions there should be no Russian flags, colors and symbols, and federations should not hold competitions in Russia.
In turn, the president of the International Boxing Association, Russian Umar Kremlev, called for Russian and Belarusian athletes to be returned to all sports competitions.
In February, the IOC recommended that international federations remove the Russians from the competition due to Russia’s full-scale military aggression against Ukraine.
At an Extraordinary General Assembly in Berlin, IPC members have voted 64-39 (with 16 abstentions) in favor of a motion to suspend NPC Russia with immediate effect due to its inability to comply with membership obligations under the IPC Constitution.
