Ice dance coach Alexei Gorshkov, in an interview with , said that without Russian skaters, international tournaments lost their competition and appeal.
In February, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) recommended that federations prevent Russian and Belarusian athletes from competing due to the situation in Ukraine. Many international federations have followed the recommendations.
– Thomas Bach at the G-20 summit said that all athletes have the right to participate in international tournaments, even from countries in conflict. Do you think there is any hope of a comeback?
– They are already waiting for us, because together with the Russians, the money that the International Skating Union received for broadcasting competitions has also disappeared. Moreover, without Russian athletes, international tournaments have lost their former dynamism, which was ensured by competition. We don’t know where this will lead. But there is always the feeling that the Olympics will slip away from us.
Therefore, now, like in football, it doesn’t matter if your team is playing well or badly, the main thing is to cheer them on. For all of us to be “saved”, it is very important to work together. The consolidation of all forces is necessary: athletes, coaches, judges and leaders, Gorshkov told .
Gorshkov is an honored coach of Russia. Among her students are dance duos Albena Denkova/Maxim Stavisky, Oksana Domnina/Maxim Shabalin, Olga Sharutenko/Dmitry Naumkin. Currently, the pairs Irina Khavronina / Dario Chirizano and Elizaveta Pasechnik / Maxim Nekrasov are training with Gorshkov.
