Three-time Olympic fencing champion Galina Gorokhova said she was outraged by the decision of the International Fencing Federation (FIE) to extend the suspension of Russian athletes from competitions under the organization’s auspices.
Earlier, Russian Fencing Federation (FFR) President Ilgar Mammadov told that the FIE Congress voted to extend the suspension of Russians from international tournaments until March 2023. According to Mammadov, an extraordinary meeting of the Congress will then be held, during which the question of the admission of the Russians will again be raised.
“If it’s already been removed, it won’t affect it in any way. All of that is bad, of course, because we haven’t done anything like that. Few people invest as much in the development of fencing as we do. Those who abduct us after that are impudent without scruples!Countries that have nothing to do with fencing vote.
I don’t think anything will change in March. We still do not understand what claims are against us. The IOC shouts that sport is out of politics, while doing everything to divide the sporting community. I think it is high time to democratize this CIO – some officials sit there for a long time without elections. And the athlete in the end turns out to be the most defenseless,” Gorokhova told .
On March 2, the FIE, following the recommendation of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), suspended Russian athletes from participating in competitions under its auspices due to the situation in Ukraine.
